A rising star in a global management consulting firm sought help from a coach when his election to Partner ran into obstacles. While his client work was exceptional, he received feedback that his eagerness to drive ahead sometimes limited his ability to listen, leaving senior colleagues with a sense that he was not yet mature enough to advance further.
Mark performed a Narrative 360 Impact Assessment for the client to gather data on how he was showing up in different situations and how his high-energy work style sometimes undermined people’s trust in his leadership. Over a period of six months, the client met with Mark every other week to explore the mindsets that sometimes triggered unhelpful behaviors and to create more constructive, alternative behaviors. Over time, the client gained more control over the impulses that occasionally worked against him through an evolution of both his mental models and his actions. These behavioral changes were immediately recognized by his colleagues.
On the strength of his personal development, the client was elected that same year. He received the highest possible evaluation for each of the subsequent four years and was fast-tracked to Senior Partner. Recently, he was identified as the global firm’s most influential mentor, and he regularly connects younger associates with Mark to receive coaching as they prepare for election.
